Going over many key structures, GM Ivan Sokolov explains the thought process of a top grandmaster when it comes to evaluating changes in the pawn structures in the Middlegame and their relation to piece play. The themes for this camp are:
-RL Chigorin structure
-Hanging pawns (coming from different openings)
-Tarrasch isolated pawn
Grandmaster Ivan Sokolov had great achievements as a player, peaking at no. 13 in the World and surpassing 2700 in rating. He won many tournaments and is one of a small group of players to beat Garry Kasparov in classical chess. These days he is more known as a prolific chess writer (latest MAGNUS CARLSEN’S MIDDLEGAME EVOLUTION, Quality Chess 2021) and a trainer for many high-profile players, including for a few years a talented young Iranian by the name of Alireza Firouzja, and of course, he was the trainer of Uzbekistan in the Chennai 2022 Chess Olympiad.
