Newsletter July 12th, 2022

Schools out for summer? No! Lots of you still show up for our daily classes or watch them on repeat. Homework submissions are down 10-20% from the peak of gloomy winter, but tournament activity is up up up!
Sam Shankland is playing a computer game tournament on Chess24.
Tarun Kanyamarala won the Irish Championship. Well done!
Christopher Yoo is leading the US Junior with a full point with 4.5/5. A few former members are playing in the girls’ section and doing well.
Jonathan Blackburn is playing in the South Wales Open that finishes today. This is a good warm-up before the Olympiad at the end of the month.
Mayank (age 13) won the Indian u17 Championship. Kushal was 4th. The two had a dramatic encounter midway in the tournament where Kushal could have won, but it eventually ended in a draw.
A lot of you played in the World Open. The website sucks!
Renier Castellanos and his wife Raluca Sgircea are playing in Benasque. Both are chasing the GM title. Renier is only a norm away, while Raluca has the benefit of the WGM title being a tad easier to achieve. Or maybe Raluca will simply skip straight to the IM title. After 7 rounds her performance would give her an IM norm, while Renier probably needs to win all his remaining games to make the GM norm.
Kirk won a local GM open in California (unrated?!) after drawing the two GMs and beating everyone else.

Vivaan gained 186 points in his last tournament!
There are definitely results and activities we have missed. Keep putting your results and events on the forum. It inspires your fellow students to play and to work. It is important!
